The $230 keypad that reveals how OpenAI thinks people will use AI
Behind every product that changed human behavior lies a simple idea: make something that people already do easier, faster, or possible in an entirely new way. The earliest mobile phones solved the problem that had long limited landlines by allowing people to communicate wherever they were. BlackBerry extended that promise beyond voice and helped normalize the idea that work and communication could travel with us. When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, he described it as three devices in one: an iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator. The pitch has become one of the most famous product introductions in history, not because it promised three separate technologies, but because it introduced a new way for people to interact with computing itself.
Nearly two decades later, that formula has remained remarkably resilient. The smartphone is still many devices rolled into one, and it continues to do each of them extraordinarily well. Yet the modern smartphone was designed long before large language models entered public life, which means that one of the most consequential technologies of our time has largely been forced to fit into an interface that was never built for it.
For many users, artificial intelligence has already arrived on their smartphones, but they experience it primarily through a chat box. While that interface has proven enormously useful, it captures only a small fraction of what modern AI systems are capable of doing. Today's models can see, hear, write, reason, search for information, use software, and increasingly act on behalf of their users, yet most interactions still begin with a blinking cursor and a text prompt. Artificial intelligence has become one of the most important questions facing consumer technology because the industry has yet to determine how people will ultimately interact with it. Apple, OpenAI, and others are investing billions of dollars in that search as they increasingly treat AI as the next major interface problem in computing. However, the companies are cautious in their approach, and their caution is well earned.
The search for AI’s native interface
The recent history of AI hardware is littered with ambitious products that promised to reinvent how humans interact with machines and failed to convince consumers that they needed anything beyond the devices already in their pockets. Humane's Ai Pin, perhaps the most heavily marketed of these efforts, was discontinued after HP acquired the startup's assets for $116M and shut down the cloud services that kept the device alive. Other products suffered from the same fundamental problem. They attempted to persuade users to adopt entirely new ways of interacting with artificial intelligence before there was any consensus on what that interaction should look like.
OpenAI appears to have taken a far more measured approach. Rather than attempting to build the smartphone's successor overnight, the company's first hardware product focuses on a much narrower question: what happens when artificial intelligence is given its own physical controls?
On July 15, 2026, OpenAI released the Codex Micro, a small desktop macro pad designed for developers who use its AI coding agent, Codex. Created in collaboration with keyboard maker Work Louder, the limited-edition device is priced at $230 and will be sold only while stock lasts. It is OpenAI's first commercially released hardware product, though it remains separate from the larger consumer device the company is developing with Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief whose startup io OpenAI acquired for roughly $6.5B.
A device built to delegate
For a company whose software writes essays and working code, the striking thing about its first gadget is how little intelligence it carries. The Codex Micro is a small square of 13 mechanical keys, a joystick, and a rotary dial, and none of it runs an AI model. Six frosted 'Agent Keys' sit across the top, each tied to a running Codex conversation, and each lights up to show what that agent is doing, whether it is thinking, running, waiting, or done, before the user ever switches windows.
The rest of the pad is a management vocabulary. Command keys give one-press shortcuts for accepting or rejecting an agent's work, the joystick launches common workflows like reviewing code or debugging an error, and the dial adjusts how much reasoning, meaning time, and computing power an agent spends on a task. OpenAI calls the pad a "command center for agentic work," and the description is precise: every control exists to assign a job, check on a job, or judge a finished job, while the work itself happens somewhere else entirely.
What the remote control reveals
That inversion separates the Codex Micro from every AI gadget that preceded it, because those devices all tried to be the intelligence. Humane's pin wanted to answer questions itself, and a wave of similar gadgets promised to act on a user's behalf, each one designed to pull the assistant out of the phone and into a new body. All of them assumed the problem worth solving was access to intelligence. The Codex Micro assumes the opposite.
The intelligence lives elsewhere, in OpenAI's data centers, already working through tasks a developer handed over earlier in the day. What that developer lacks is not another way to talk to AI, but a way to watch several AIs at once, and the pad is built to fill that gap. Its lights answer a question that a chat window handles poorly: the status of five jobs running simultaneously.
The interface question
Seen that way, the pad quietly disputes the assumption underneath the entire chat era. The chat interface made sense when models could only respond, because a text box is the natural shape for a conversation. Agents changed the shape of the work. A developer using Codex assigns a task, waits, checks the result, and approves or rejects it, and that loop looks less like messaging a friend than like managing an employee. The tools of management differ from the tools of conversation: status at a glance, a way to interrupt, a way to sign off. The Codex Micro is a set of tools rendered in plastic and light.
That reversal raises the question sitting underneath OpenAI's much-anticipated consumer device. The industry has spent three years hunting for hardware that brings AI closer to the user, a companion that listens and speaks. OpenAI's first actual hardware moves in the other direction, keeping AI at arm's length while it works and handing the human the controls of a supervisor. If this is the interface OpenAI believes AI needs, the mass-market device Jony Ive ships with may not be a better chatbot at all, but a product designed around assigning, monitoring, and managing agents.
The cheapest possible experiment
If the Micro is a thesis about interfaces, it is also the least expensive way imaginable to test one. Hardware is traditionally where software companies burn money, through supply chains, inventory, and support obligations, and OpenAI structured this launch to avoid nearly all of it. The pad is a reworked version of a keyboard that Work Louder already sells; the boutique manufacturer handles production, and the limited run caps inventory risk to a single batch. Against the budget of the IVE project, the Micro costs OpenAI almost nothing while buying real information: whether people will pay for a physical surface whose only job is to supervise software.
There is a more modest reading that deserves equal weight. A limited-run device built on another company's chassis may reveal nothing about OpenAI's larger plans. The company itself described the device to TechCrunch in terms that position it closer to merchandise than to a product line, and six status lights become useless the moment a developer runs a seventh agent. Both readings fit the same facts, and the Micro is either a toy for the faithful or an early sketch of the interface OpenAI believes AI actually requires, with nothing about a batch of keyboards settling which.
For now, the people running fleets of AI agents are mostly programmers, which is why OpenAI's first hardware wears a developer's clothes, but the behavior underneath it belongs to no particular profession. Assigning work, checking status, and stepping in when a light turns red is what managers have done for a century, and OpenAI is betting it is what everyone will soon do with software. When that moment arrives, the device in most pockets will need to answer a different question than the iPhone did. The iPhone puts three tools in every hand. The next device may put a workforce there, and the interface that matters will be the one that lets an ordinary person run it.
